Set up supervision

Updated:20 weeks ago

Setting up supervision requires confirmation from a parent or guardian. If a teen sends a request for supervision, and the parent or guardian accepts, supervision is confirmed. Keep in mind, only one parent or guardian can supervise a teen’s account.

In general, to be supervised, teens must be 13-17 and the parent must be over 18 years old. Age requirements vary by region. Note: Meta accounts for children on Meta Horizon are for people ages 10-12 (age may vary by region), and automatically have set-up supervision.

Note:

  • A parent can supervise more than one teen’s account, but they can only send one active invite link at a time. For security purposes, we may limit the number of accounts that a parent account can supervise at any given time. Teens can also change who supervises their account.
  • A parent can’t supervise a teen’s account if either of them has blocked each other. Learn how to unblock someone.
  • If supervision is set up and you block your parent or teen, supervision will automatically be removed and your parent or teen will be notified.
  • Parents and teens can get notifications about supervision activity. If a parent or teen has turned on push notifications, they may get push notifications. Parents can choose which account will be shown on Family Center and receive notifications in their Family Center settings.

Send an invite to supervise your teen’s account

Parents and guardians can send invites for supervision. Parents who want to supervise more than one teen can send an invite to each teen they want to supervise.

Keep in mind, invites expire 48 hours from the time they are first created. If the invite has expired, follow the steps to create a new invite again.

Set up supervision in Family Center:

  1. Visit https://familycenter.meta.com/supervision.
  2. Tap Get started.
  3. Select the accounts you want to supervise. You can also share a link if you can’t find your teen’s account.
  4. Tap Send invite.

Resending or canceling invites

Invites expire after 48 hours. You can resend or cancel an invite if it has been less than 48 hours since you first created the invite. If it’s been more than 48 hours, create a new invite with the steps above.

Accepting or declining supervision requests

Parents can accept or decline a supervision invite. If a parent sends their teen an invite, supervision will start after the invite is accepted. If a teen sends their parent a request, supervision will start after the parent accepts the invite.

To accept or decline an invite or request, open the link that was sent to you by your teen, then follow the instructions on screen to accept or decline. They will get a notification that you accepted or declined supervision.

If a request is declined, and the teen is under 16, they won’t be able to make any updates to their teen safety settings until they turn 16.
